Day 1

Huaraz – Cuartelhuain – Mirador Asian

Your adventure begins with a scenic three-hour drive from Huaraz (3,100m / 10,170 ft) into the heart of the Andes. As we travel through the Callejón de Huaylas Valley, you’ll pass traditional villages and farmlands, offering a glimpse into Andean life. Along the way, marvel at the towering Puya Raimondi plants, an extraordinary species unique to the region.

The journey continues into the Huascarán National Park, where the road ascends to the Yanashallash Pass (4,600m / 15,100 ft). Here, we pause to enjoy sweeping views of the valleys and peaks before descending to Cuartelhuain (4,200m / 13,780 ft).

At Cuartelhuain, we set up our campsite and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, embark on an acclimatization hike to the Mirador Asian, offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Afterward, return to camp for a hearty dinner and prepare for your first night in the Andes.

Day 2

Cuartelhuain – Lake Mitucocha

After a nourishing breakfast, we begin trekking the legendary Huayhuash Circuit. The day starts with a steady climb to the Cacananpunta Pass (4,690m / 15,387 ft), the first major pass of the trek. The ascent rewards us with breathtaking views of the rugged valleys and rivers below, as well as the surrounding snow-capped peaks.

From the pass, the trail descends into a picturesque valley, leading us to our campsite near Lake Mitucocha (4,250m / 13,944 ft). This serene glacial lake is surrounded by the dramatic peaks of Yerupaja, Rondoy, and Ninashanca, creating an unforgettable backdrop for the evening.

Day 3

Lake Mitucocha – Lake Carhuacocha

Today’s journey is a highlight of the circuit as we trek toward the stunning Lake Carhuacocha (4,130m / 13,550 ft). The day begins with a gradual climb along the edge of Lake Mitucocha, offering panoramic views of the towering peaks of Yerupaja and Ninashanca.

The trail ascends to the Carhuacocha Pass (4,650m / 15,256 ft), where the breathtaking scenery of the Cordillera Huayhuash unfolds in every direction. From here, we descend into a beautiful valley surrounded by glacial streams and vibrant turquoise rivers. After a full day of trekking, we arrive at Lake Carhuacocha, one of the most iconic sites on the trek. Our campsite, located just below the lake, offers unparalleled views of the water and surrounding peaks.

Day 4

Lake Carhuacocha – Huayhuash

Today begins with a gradual ascent from the Carhuacocha Valley, with the imposing Yerupaja Mountain (6,634m / 21,766 ft) as your constant companion. The trail leads to the Siula Pass (4,800m / 15,784 ft), a challenging climb that offers some of the most breathtaking views of the trek.

At the pass, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of glacial lakes in shades of turquoise and blue, surrounded by towering peaks. These vibrant lakes, fed by the surrounding glaciers, create a surreal and unforgettable sight. From here, descend into the valley to reach the Huayhuash Campsite (4,400m / 14,436 ft), where dinner and rest await after an exhilarating day.

Day 5

Huayhuash – Lake Viconga

From the pass, the trail descends into a valley, leading us to Lake Viconga (4,400m / 14,436 ft). Arriving at camp by mid-afternoon, you’ll have plenty of time to relax and rejuvenate in the nearby natural hot springs, a true highlight of the trek. Enjoy a well-earned soak while surrounded by the majestic Andes, before dinner and an evening under the stars.

Day 6

Lake Viconga – Punta Cuyoc – Huanacpatay

Before reaching the pass, you’ll cross a flat meadow dotted with three small lakes, providing a welcome break from the climb.

Once at the pass, marvel at the panoramic views of peaks like Pumarinri, Cuyoc, and Puscanturpa, each standing as silent sentinels over this dramatic landscape. The descent into the Huanacpatay Valley (4,325m / 14,190 ft) is more gradual, and the warmer temperatures at the lower elevation offer a pleasant change. Our campsite is nestled in the valley, surrounded by rolling hills and vibrant vegetation.

Day 7

Huanacpatay – San Antonio – Huayllapa – Huatia

The day begins with a steep climb to the San Antonio Pass (5,020m / 16,470 ft). From the top, you’ll be rewarded with one of the trek’s most stunning views, encompassing glacial lakes like Jurau, Sarapacocha, and Caramarca, as well as the towering peaks of Trapecio, Jurau, Carnicero, and Siula Grande—the mountain famously featured in the book and film Touching the Void.

After soaking in the views, descend back into the Huanacpatay Valley and make your way to the quaint village of Huayllapa (3,400m / 11,155 ft). Here, you’ll encounter the vibrant flora, trees, and agricultural fields that thrive at this lower altitude. After a short rest in the village, begin the challenging ascent to Huatia Camp (4,350m / 14,272 ft), located in a scenic meadow beneath the shadow of Diablo Mudo Mountain.

Day 8

Huatia – Punta Tapush – Susucocha – Cashpapampa

Descend gradually to Cashpapampa Camp (4,500m / 14,764 ft), the highest campsite on the trek. The views from this location are nothing short of spectacular, making it an excellent spot for stargazing in the clear mountain skies.

Day 9

Cashpapampa – Lake Jahuacocha

The descent from the pass leads into the Huacrish Valley, where the trail becomes gentler as it winds toward the stunning Lake Jahuacocha (4,050m / 13,827 ft).

Lake Jahuacocha is one of the highlights of the entire trek, with its crystal-clear waters framed by towering snow-capped peaks. Spend the evening relaxing at the campsite, taking in the serene beauty of the lake and its surroundings.

Lake Jahuacocha – Llamac – Huaraz

Take in the last sweeping views of the Cordillera Huayhuash, a fitting farewell to this unforgettable journey.

From the pass, descend into the village of Llamac (3,250m / 10,662 ft), where our private transport will be waiting. After bidding farewell to the trekking crew, enjoy the scenic drive back to Huaraz, where you can relax and celebrate the successful completion of one of the most challenging and rewarding treks in the Andes.
