Huaraz – Querococha Lake – Chavín de Huántar – Huaraz
The adventure begins with an early morning departure from Huaraz (3100m / 10,170 ft). As you travel south, you’ll pass through charming highland villages such as Recuay (3300m / 10,827 ft) and cross the Santa River, gaining a glimpse into rural Andean life. The scenic drive winds through eucalyptus forests and open pastures before reaching Querococha Lake (3980m / 13,058 ft). Here, you’ll stop to take in the stunning views and capture photos of this picturesque spot.
Continuing along the route, you’ll ascend to the Cahuish Tunnel Pass (4500m / 14,764 ft), a significant hydrological divide where waters flow west to the Pacific Ocean and east to the Atlantic Ocean. The descent takes you through the Mosna Valley, following the river until you reach the modern district of Chavín, where the archaeological site is located.
At around 1:00 PM, enjoy your box lunch and snack before beginning your guided tour of the Chavín de Huántar Archaeological Site. Your expert guide will lead you through the ancient Chavín Castle, a ceremonial complex of stone labyrinths, plazas, and terraces. Key highlights include the Lanzón de Chavín, a massive carved monolith central to the Chavín religion, and the Cabezas Clavas, enigmatic stone heads that once adorned the temple walls.
The tour concludes with a visit to the Chavín Museum, home to preserved artifacts and relics that shed light on the history of this fascinating pre-Inca civilization. At 4:00 PM, begin the return journey to Huaraz, with a non-stop drive arriving at your hotel around 7:00 PM.
